Constipation, irregular bowel movements due to various reasons during pregnancy can be a result of constipation. This can be mostly due to the hormonal changes, intake of iron tablets or diet. You may think a better treatment during pregnancy can get rid of the condition, but what treatment to take depends on the severity of the constipation and it can be treated by dietary intake and also through your lifestyle.
Constipation In Pregnancy: What To Do?
Mostly all women experience constipation at pregnancy period and you need to be conscious about it to keep in control.
Drinking plenty of water a day is much needed. About 10-12 cups are recommended for proper digestion and easy bowel movements and clean up of the intestine. Even lemon or fruit juices are best to relieve of constipation troubles.
Good if you add high fibre containing food to your diet which helps to clean up your bowels. 18-30g of fibre a day is good to maintain health and reduce the constipation severity. Fruits, cereals, vegetables, etc are rich in fibre.
Bulky rich food items like wheat bran helps in softening the stools and reduce the constipation to greater extend.
Iron supplements thickens and hardens stools, try reducing the iron supplements you take along the diet. If you find stools are very hard you could take colace, the stool softener pill.
If your gynaecologist have prescribed you laxatives, have the correct dosage as told or this will lead to further complications during pregnancy. Laxatives should not be taken before bed. This makes stools more bulky with fluid mixing of the bowel making it easier to pass. Stimulant laxative and mineral oils are not usually advisable.
It is good to change the eating habits by adding fibre to every meal and also instead of three course meals make it to six mini-meals which can decrease the bloating nature and gas trouble which you normally experience at pregnancy.
Pregnancy time, you need to take proper exercises like walking, jogging, doing household works, etc as this could make your muscles much loose and flexible than you expect.
